Now More Than Ever.

We all agree that certain things have to change. Defunding is NOT the solution.
Nobody disputes that tremendous social injustice exists and that there are certain wrongs that need to be made right. The murder of George Floyd and the numerous other heinous crimes in recent headlines require swift action and those involved in the killing of innocent citizens must be brought to justice. We must collectively condemn the actions of any officer in any jurisdiction that do not follow the law and uphold the high calling of their departments.

The fact is that, here at home in the Upper Valley, positive reforms are taking shape, plans for change are being developed in real time, and progress is being made. But in this age of "instant gratification", when the outcry is to put something on the chopping block just to quickly satiate our collective desire for justice, all too often the simple reaction proves to be misguided and counter-productive. Now more than ever, we must consider that entire cost associated with calls to defund our local law enforcement programs.
Our Lebanon Police have a proven track record and work hard to keep our area safe. In a region where drug running through the interstate corridor is rampant, we feel blessed to have an exemplary police force dedicated to our community. It would be a mistake to reduce their budget by even one percent!
Defunding the Lebanon Police Department in the name of politically-motivated social justice is just such a misguided and counter-productive endeavor. Our Lebanon law enforcement program specializes in services that affect the greater Upper Valley region and beyond, the budget is focused heavily on providing additional training to its personnel, and steps are being taken to best serve ALL members of our community.

We're asking YOU to add your voice to those who support our local Lebanon Police Department by keeping their funding intact.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • The Lebanon Police Department is one of only a few NH departments that were in compliance with ALL provisions listed in a recent report issued by the Governor.
  • The Lebanon Police Department has achieved CALEA accreditation status, which only a handful of departments across the US have achieved.

The TRUTH about "defund"

The fact is that the overwhelming majority of our nation's citizens, regardless of age, race, gender, etc., disagree with the move to defund our police programs. The truth is that intact funding is required in order to conduct the training elements that are needed while still serving and protecting our local communities. Recent polls show that more people actually support an increase in local police funding, as opposed to lowering it. The reality is that our citizens recognize that we need local law enforcement, perhaps now more than ever.

The POLITICS of "defund"

Sadly the "defund" message is simply being used as a political platform to bully our civic leaders through emotionally-charged rhetoric. While most would agree that enhancing training and instituting new policies to confront bad actors within departments is paramount, there is no evidence to suggest that slashing law enforcement funding is a viable solution that would still maintain public safety. In fact, cities that have already begun to cut budgets in law enforcement are seeing violent and gun-related crime rates skyrocket to all-time highs in recent months.

Right now we NEED Police

The Upper Valley region of New Hampshire and Vermont is truly blessed to have the service and support of the Lebanon Police Department. With a record of excellence and leadership among the region's public safety programs, Lebanon provides a level of service that is unprecedented for an area of our size. However, with the drug challenges and other concerns facing our community, it would be disastrous for our civic leaders to pay heed to the special interest groups determined to take down our local police departments at great cost to our public safety.
